Office Policies

I will do my best to assist you in making this experience meaningful and fruitful. Therapy is not easily described in general terms. It varies depending on the personalities of the therapist and client(s), and the particular concerns you are experiencing. There can be several methods employed to deal with the matters that you hope to address. Psychotherapy is not like a medical doctor check-up. Emotional health and well-being calls for a very active effort on your part. In order for the therapy to be most successful, you will have to work on things we talk about both during our sessions and in between sessions. Therapy can have benefits and risks. Since it sometimes likely will involve discussing some unpleasant aspects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. None the less, therapy has been shown to have many good and far-reaching benefits. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress. There are no guarantees of what you will experience. It is important that we discuss any questions, discomfort, or concerns you have regarding this process. We will probably be able to adapt this experience to better meet your needs.

I practice couples and family therapy as well as individual therapy. I work with adults, adolescents and children. Family Therapy is utilized where two or more family members (sometimes including couples that may not be legally married) are working on the same or related concerns. Family therapy sessions frequently involve two or more people being seen together, but may involve sessions where only some members of the family are present, perhaps only a single member. In these cases, my general practice is to keep information confidential, when discussed in these sessions outside the family session, but to share information between family members where that seems both practical and the client is likely to agree would be helpful to achieve the goal. If you have any questions about this policy or would prefer the situation be handled differently, let’s discuss it.

I request that clients pay fees at each session or at the first meeting or group/parenting programs unless other arrangements have been made in advance.

You (not your insurance company) are responsible for full payment of fees. It is very important that you find out exactly what mental health services your insurance policy covers if you plan on utilizing it. If you have questions about the coverage, call your plan administrator. This is essential, period. There is no need to stress about coverage. If you are using an Exchange Plan I can see you and would like to, PLEASE check on your out-of-network services. I am a participant in Open Path Psychotherapy Collective. Also, keep in mind that you are not required to use insurance. Under HIPAA, you have the right not to use insurance benefits if you desire complete privacy for your personal information. I accept private paying clients.
